5 Films To Take A Break To…

Since school is starting up again for me and it’s back to deadlines, sleepless nights and cramming, I thought it would be a good idea to make a list of some films (mostly rom-coms) that help me destress and take the edge off a little bit. So sit back, get some popcorn and enjoy the movie marathon, you deserve it!

1.  When Harry Met Sally (1989)

This is by far one of my favourite films of all time. I think it’s really relaxing because it’s super easy to just get lost in and enjoy for a while. Everything is so romantically lit and Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan on screen together is magical to watch. Definitely recommend this one with a warm cup of tea!

2. (500) Days Of Summer (2009)

When I first saw this movie I didn’t like it at all, but to be fair I was nine and didn’t understand what was happening or why these two didn’t fall madly in love at the beginning and live happily ever after. It wasn’t until I saw this movie again a few years later that I fell in love with it and really understood the point it was trying to make. It is a really gorgeous film in my opinion and I think I’m due to watch it again soon..

3. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

Okay I think this is a bit of an odd one to put on a list of films to help you relax, but for some reason this movie completely calms me down. I love the way everything feels like a living, breathing comic book and the comedic style really resonates with me. Also I have a bit of a crush on Ramona Flowers so I’m probably a little bias!

4. Clueless (1995)

Ahh clueless, my go-to teen flick. I love everything about this movie, from the fashion to the 90’s humour to the young Paul Rudd it’s just great all round. This has always been a favourite of mine when I need to wind down or put something on before bed.

5. Definitely, Maybe (2008)

Last but not least, a movie that always makes me cry a little (happy tears).. definitely, maybe! The relationship between Will (Ryan Reynolds) and his daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) is so sweet to watch and the movie itself is just really nicely made. Another one to watch with some tea for sure!

Games

Some Thoughts On Horizon: Zero Dawn…

It’s been a while since I’ve genuinely enjoyed playing through a game this much and I’ve got to say so far, it’s the best game I’ve played all year.

There’s so much to love about Horizon, it’s gorgeous environment, it’s rich storyline and interesting side quests, the amount of diversity among the NPC’s and one of the best parts, the protagonist is a female! (and she’s pretty awesome)

Also did I mention it’s beautiful?

I’m really loving watching the story unfold. Aloy is such a three dimensional character and seeing her kick ass moments are just as powerful as seeing her more vulnerable moments, and getting to choose the way she reacts in certain situations is a really nice touch

Gameplay wise it’s great too! There’s freedom to choose how you want to approach and defeat the machines you come into contact with and plenty of different weapons at you’re disposal which can be modified

I haven’t completed the game yet as it is quite dense but I’m really enjoying just taking my time with it 🙂

Some Thoughts On The Last Guardian…

So I’m halfway through playing The Last Guardian, which is a game I’ve developed a bit of a love/hate relationship with and the question I kept asking myself through the first couple of hours was “what is so great about this?” I didn’t understand why people were falling in love with this game and why it was getting such glowing reviews. The controls are shaky and frustrating, my tv screen is covered in feathers of this beast that won’t listen to me half the time, this little boy has fallen over more times than I can count and graphically, it’s not incredible. There’s no denying that the game has its flaws.

But then something happened through the next couple of hours. I stopped looking for a reason or an objective and I just watched Trico (who for all intensive purposes in this post is female). I watched how tentative she was to eat the barrels I’d worked so hard to get her, I noticed how her movements changed when I pet her in different areas, I laughed as she splashed in puddles, I gasped when she caught me in mid air with her tail and I just all around started to enjoy her company. I found myself waiting for her to finish whatever she was doing before I continued and even gently calling her over out loud at certain points. I’d developed this bond with her that I thought was really heart warming and rare to see in video games, especially ones where there is little to no dialogue. Journey is also an excellent example of this.

I’m yet to finish The Last Guardian and whilst there are a lot of really quite beautiful moments in it, there are still a lot of frustrating moments that I find hard to look past. Who knows maybe my opinion will change when I get to the end, I might even make a follow up post on it!

That’s all for now, bye lil beans!

Personal

Bit Of An Introduction…

Hi lil beans!

I just thought I’d introduce myself a little since I’m new to the blogosphere.

So I’m Em and I’m currently a student living in Melbourne. I created this blog because I love anything to do with media and storytelling and I want to share my opinions on that (of which I have many).

I’ll mainly be posting reviews and thoughts on movies, tv shows, video games and books/comics on here and of course there’ll be some casual updates on what’s going on in my life.

Anyway, that’s all for now just wanted to keep it short and sweet! 🙂
